Fencing
An easy way to estimate the amount you will need is to measure the length of run required, lets say 10.8m next divide the fence panel width (1.8m) into the run required(10.8m) 10.8/1.8=6. This would mean you will need six panels. Once you have decided you need 6 bays you will then need 7 posts. Always add one more post to the number of bays required. Next consideration is the finish height of the fence.
A simple rule of thumb is to allow 2ft of post material into the ground to be concreted. Therefore for a 6ft finish height an 8ft post will be required. The other method is to use drive in post supports (ground dependant) these drive in the ground 18” and sit proud of the ground by 6” the post is then clamped into the support. With this method a 6” post is used for a 6ft finish height. Last thing to consider is the use of a wooden gravel board at the bottom of the panel, this is then in contact with the ground and hence would be replaced before the more expensive panel needs replacing.
To estimate for a 10.8 metre run of 1.8m (w) x 18m (h) closeboard panel fencing including concrete and nails etc.
Please note due to the constant fluctuation of the timber market, our prices remain subject to change and will be confirmed on receipt of order.

To estimate 12 metres of closeboard in DIY form with a finish height of 6ft using 8ft (2.4m) bay size (distance between posts).
Find the number of bays by dividing the distance required (12m) by the bay size (2.4m)
12/2.4 = 5 bays
Once the number of bays has been established then same rule applies to the posts 5 bays = 6 posts (5" x 3" x 2.4m) 3 notch to suit the mid rails.
To establish the number of arris rails (triangular sec which fits into notches on post) multiply number of bays x 3(number of notches on post)
5(bays) x 3(arris rails) = 15 rails @ 2.4m.
Number of bays again equates to how many gravel boards needed 5 @ 2.4 metres.
5 Gravel boards (150mm x 22mm x 2.4m)
The rule of thumb on feather edge boards is 10 per metre, so for a run of 12 metres
12x10 = 120m of 5'6” feather edge boards.

Decking
To estimate a decking area of 4.8m x 3.6m. (Deck boards to run 4.8m length)
First task is to work out your outer frame work so you will need.
2no 4" x 2" x 4.8m lengths
2no 4" x 2" x 3.6m lengths
Next task is to decide which way to run the deckboards as you need to brace the opposite way with the internal braces. So for the boards to run the 4.8m run you will need to divide the length by 600mm
4800/600=8 gives you the number of pieces for the internal frame.
Next task is to estimate how many deckboards you will need, so if the boards are running along the 4.8m length we need to divide the width of the boards (120mm) by the distance they are to span (3.6m).
3600/120 = 30 boards @ 4.8m

How to Measure…
Wooden Gates
The measurement we need to calculate for wooden gates is the distance
between walls at ground level and again at the highest point of the required
finish height of the gate. Alternatively the total distance that
needs to be filled with a Gate as certain gates have a maximum leaf length
and height before they become too heavy for the ironwork and bracing.
Timber Decking
The measurement we need is the outer dimensions of the area where the deck is going to placed. We would also need to know the way in which the deck boards are being laid. If the deck is to be raised above the ground we need to know the finish height to work out the post sizes.
Timber Fencing
The measurements we need for fencing is the required distance of the fence run in metres and also the required finished height. We would also require the type of fence required and the bay sizes.
Installation

We approve of the quality workmanship of the following installers. However, we undertake no responsibility for the job you commission them to do and we recommend that you obtain a full specification and quotation from them including timescales for completion.
