What Is Creosote?
Creosote is a natural product, obtained by distillation of coal tar. It has the unique properties of penetrating deep into timber and protecting it against water, fungi and insects.
Timber treated with Creosote is known to last for over 30 years without any significant signs of decay. Creosote offers by far the best price-quality performance of all known wood preservatives.
The history of Creosote goes back till 1716 when in England a patent was granted for "oyle or spirit of tarr" to protect ship planks against decay. In nearly 300 years Creosote has been used as a wood preservative, it has amply proved its effectiveness.
The Truth About Legislation
As from 30th June 2003, the European Commission Directive 2001/90/EC of 26th October 2001 will apply. In short, this directive amounts to the following:
- Creosote can no longer be sold to the general public (consumers)
- Creosote can be sold to industrial installations and professional users, provided:
- It contains less than 0.005 % Benzo-a-pyrene by mass (Cindu spec is less than 0.002 %)
- It contains less than 3 % water extractable phenols (Cindu spec is well below 3 %)
- It is packed in units of at least 20 kg, marked "For industrial installations or professional treatment* only"
This means that for you, the professional user, Creosote will remain available for many years to come (professional users include farmers, construction companies, fencing companies, saw mills, and anyone who is professionally involved in timber maintenance).
